A water main busted early this morning at 13th and Florida, resulting in my having no water until very recently. I was a little baffled when I shuffled into the kitchen with great plans to brew myself a nice little french press 'o' coffee and my faucet hissed at me but produced no water. I turned around and saw that my basil plant was looking extra sad with a side order of thirsty, so went to the bathroom where the faucet produced the same hissing sound. I periodically have low water pressure (I'm on the top floor), but this was definitively no water. The silver lining of this is that it motivated me to go to the gym (which I was having strong thoughts of skipping), if only for the shower. It never occurred to me to check the news, and it wasn't until I got down to the lobby that I realized that it wasn't just my apartment, or even just my building, but that the whole neighborhood (and several others to boot) was waterless. I walked down to my gym (which is not next door) and was surprised that they didn't have water either. I ended up having to walk all the way down to Farragut to work out and shower. On the way back I stopped at the gross-ery store (Ye Ole Slaveway, land of mouldy produce) where the beverage aisle looked like half past armeggedon. Note to self: if there in an emergency get water early and bring a stick to beat back the crowds. There wasn't a single bottle or jug of any kind holding water in that store. I mean, even the selzer water was gone. Luckily, there was just enough water left in my Britta thingy to make a single serving of coffee. Clean and caffeinated, what more could you want?
Well, I wanted to water my plants, but they seemed to have survived the afternoon.
